Is Vampire Weekend's fifth album their best?

For anyone involved in the making of music, Vampire Weekend have always been a blessing and a curse. To listen to their catalogue is a joy but also a reminder of your absolute unremarkableness as a songwriter, a player, an arranger, a lyricist and a producer. They are just so unerringly good - and better than you at everything - it's sickening.
But never ever have they been as nauseating as they are on 'Only God Was Above Us'. It is a pristinely brilliant record, a masterpiece. Whether you come to it as a casual fan looking for the next A-Type (see Gen-X Cops), a stan looking for depth (see Hope), a chill/dinner playlist curator (Capricorn) or a simple lover of melody (see Ice Cream Piano) it has it all. There are no skips at all on the record and sonically, with the help of god-level producer Ariel Rechtshaid, it finds exactly the right balance of warmth, dirt and clarity.
Whether it is their best record will be a debate much held over the next many years but it is undoubtedly a great one.
